There is evidence of a cottage being on the site since 1606. Velvet Cottage itself was built about one hundred and fifty years ago and has been owned by the present family since 1920. It's position on Abbey Terrace affords magnificent views out across Valle Crucis (Valley of the Cross) towards the Horseshoe Pass in the distance. The cottage was built with local slatestone and the thick walls offer insulation in the Winter and welcome coolness in the height of Summer.

The cottage is an ideal holiday destination at any time of year. On cooler Spring mornings, the Superking bed will keep you warm and cosy! In warmer weather, the patio in front of the cottage is great for al fresco dining, whilst the private terrace at the back of the cottage can be used for sun-bathing (two sunbeds are provided) or for a barbecue (equipment provided). Freeview, a DVD Player and unlimited wireless broadband are included.

Velvet Cottage has been recently modernised and graded 3 Star by VisitWales. The downstairs room floors are covered in the original terracotta quarry tiling. Over the years the floor has been protected by carpet coverage and as a result it is in immaculate condition. The living room ceiling features the original oak beams, painted black in traditional Welsh style.

There are many options for eating and drinking either locally or in Llangollen itself. For evening entertainment the Abbey Grange Hotel, with it’s own micro-brewery, is five minutes’ walk away.

The extensive garden features a 4 seater patio furniture set , private sunbathing/barbecue terrace at the rear of the cottage, covered garden pond, bird table, flower beds and heather bushes. A high dividing hedge and the cottage’s position above a quiet lane ensure maximum privacy and relaxation.

Access Statement for Velvet Cottage 2013-14

• Velvet Cottage is one and a half miles North of Llangollen. It is a thirty minute walk into town, the walk back is uphill and may take longer.
• An off-road parking bay for one car is provided.
• The approach to the house has two stepped sections, one with seven steps and a second with eight. At night, an automatic security light illuminates the approach when movement is detected.
• There is no toilet on the ground floor.
• Bedrooms and the bathroom are on the first floor. There are seven steps from thr ground floor to the bathroom. The single bedroom is on the same level as the bathroom, the twin and superking bedrooms are a further three steps higher.
• The first floor stairway is well lit but if the lights are switched off and the ambient light is low, a safety light illuminates if movement is detected.
• The nearest bus stop is at the bottom of Abbey Terrace, approximately two minutes walk away, although bus times must be checked as the service is infrequent.
• Due to the terrain many mobile phone networks have limited or nil coverage in the area. The best is EE/T Mobile, although Orange and O2 have some coverage and Vodafone is accessible from the sun terrace. The landline phone in Velvet Cottage can be used to phone any UK landline number free of charge.
